Mascalzone

If you’re craving authentic Italian cuisine in Newcastle upon Tyne, Mascalzone is a must-visit. Nestled at 238 Helmsley Rd, NE2 1PP, this cozy little gem brings a slice of Italy to the heart of the city. It’s got that welcoming, homey vibe that instantly puts you at ease-whether you’re popping in for a quick bite, dining solo, or meeting friends for a long, lazy dinner.

From the moment you walk in, the aroma of fresh pizza and simmering sauces pulls you in. It's no surprise that Mascalzone has become a local favorite for lunch and dinner. With both dine-in and outdoor seating options, it works beautifully for casual catch-ups or romantic evening meals.

Now, let’s talk food-because that’s really what Mascalzone is all about.

The Pizza Parma here is a standout. Thin, crispy crust topped with Prosciutto di Parma, fresh rocket, and just the right drizzle of olive oil. Pair it with a chilled glass of white wine (their wine list is impressive, by the way), and you’ve got yourself a winner.

If you’re into pasta, you’re spoiled for choice. The Spaghetti Carbonara is creamy, rich, and perfectly seasoned. For something a little earthier, the Linguine Con Funghi hits the spot with its deep mushroom flavor and silky texture. Vegetarians will love it.

Want something heartier? The Lasagna and Cannelloni come piping hot, bubbling with cheese and layered with rich tomato sauce. The Duck Breast is a bit of a hidden secret on the menu-tender, perfectly cooked, and served with a bold sauce that makes it a top-tier main.

Seafood lovers are also in luck. The Pan Seared Seabass is delicate and flaky, while the Mussels-served in a garlic white wine sauce-are ideal for sharing. Another highlight is the Pan Fried Cod, served on a bed of olive oil mashed potato, tomatoes, and black olives. It's full of Mediterranean flavor without being too heavy.

Mascalzone also knows how to handle drinks. They serve a variety of beers, gin, and spirits, but their Raspberry Margherita is especially popular-fruity, punchy, and refreshing. Don’t leave without trying a shot of Limoncello to round out your meal.

For dessert? It's got to be the Tiramisù. It's rich, creamy, and just sweet enough. Or if you're in the mood for something warm, the Apple Turnover is a cozy comfort treat, especially with a side of great coffee-another thing they’re known for.

One thing that really sets Mascalzone apart is how accessible and user-friendly it is. The space has wheelchair-accessible entrances and seating, making it inclusive for everyone. The takeaway service is prompt and well-packaged, perfect for those nights when you’d rather eat in your PJs.

What makes it even more inviting is the balance between quality and atmosphere. You're not just coming here for a quick meal-you’re getting a true Italian dining experience, with attention to detail and a menu that doesn't try too hard but delivers in all the right ways.

Whether you're in the mood for a relaxed solo meal or catching up with friends over a glass of red and a plate of Pesto Pasta, Mascalzone manages to feel familiar without ever being boring. It hits that sweet spot where authentic Italian food, cozy surroundings, and friendly service meet effortlessly.

Absolutely beautiful meal! The setting was lovely, intimate and with a nice buzz about it. Took my elderly parents for dinner and they raved about it afterwards. Thank you everyone, we will definitely be back. One of the best seafood pastas I’ve ever eaten!

This is the best Italian cuisine I had in Newcastle, authentic and delicious. Ordered seafood linguine and really enjoyed. The flavour was spot on, the only downside for me was one or two clams tasted a bit sand, it was really difficult to fully clean the sand though. Compared the ones I had in the past, it was really good. The garlic bread was top notch too with great size. Family had lasagnas and they said it was lovely as well.

This was my second visit to Mascalzone, and I absolutely love this place! The bruschetta, linguine, risotto, and calzone were all cooked to perfection. And don’t even get me started on the desserts—they’re nothing short of divine! The service was exceptional too, with friendly staff who went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Mascalzone has truly become one of my favorite spots, and I can't wait to return!

Thoroughly enjoyed. Food well seasoned and fresh, also large portions. Friendly chatty staff, slow service when busy but was worth the wait.

This has become one of my favourite restaurants. We came by a few months back after seeing great reviews. The lady serving is so lovely and the chef works his backside off. The food is so fresh and tasty. I always get fregola and my other half always gets a pizza. Literally steaming hot to your table. The service is so nice and not overbearing at all. We highly recommend. The starters and specials are so good too. I opted for the monkfish and king prawn risotto today and it was absolutely delicious! Can't wait to return again
